Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged all eligible South Africans to register to vote before midnight on 7 August 2026, ahead of his official proclamation of the 2026 local government election date. Hlabisa highlighted the importance of youth participation and emphasised that this is the final opportunity for unregistered citizens to secure their place on the voters’ roll.

Urgent Appeal For Voter Registration

Speaking on Friday, Hlabisa stated, “This will be my last clarion call before the voters’ roll closes at midnight tonight. To all the people of South Africa, young and old, who have not checked their status on the IEC website or visited the IEC offices, you can do so today before the offices close. People must not wait for the last moment, especially not our youth.” According to the Department of Cooperative Governance, the registration deadline is decisive for those wishing to participate in the upcoming municipal polls.

Calls For Safe Elections After eThekwini Shooting

The urgency around registration comes as political tensions rise following the fatal shooting of an ANC councillor in eThekwini on 6 August, while the councillor was assisting members of the community in his office. Hlabisa condemned the incident and stressed the need for a peaceful campaign environment, saying, “The SAPS and all other law enforcement agencies are ready to ensure that we create an environment that is going to be free, open, and ensure the safety of our people. It is very sad what happened yesterday. One of our public representatives was shot in broad daylight in eThekwini. I really want to convey my condolences and want to appeal to whoever has an issue with anyone. Killing a person does not solve a problem.”

IEC officials have reiterated that voters can check and update their registration details at IEC offices until midnight. The outcome of this registration drive will directly influence the composition of local government and ultimately shape service delivery in South African communities.

The final election date is expected to be officially announced by Hlabisa on 7 August 2026. South Africans await confirmation as parties intensify their preparations for the polls.
