The arrest was made on 7 February 2026 after the Hawks acted on classified information indicating imminent threats targeting the top administrators responsible for security and discipline within the correctional facility. The warden allegedly planned the attacks using AK–47 rifles and issued death threats as part of a broader scheme, senior authorities said.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana confirmed the identity of the intended victims, explaining, “The intelligence indicated that the intended targets were the Head of Centre and a Unit Manager at Waainek Correctional Centre, both of whom are responsible for the administration, discipline and security of the institution.”

Corruption And Security Concerns In SA Prisons

Waainek Correctional Centre has drawn attention over alleged staff misconduct and internal conflicts, highlighting the dangers faced by officials committed to upholding discipline in state institutions.

The successful disruption of this alleged plot underscores the significance of targeted intelligence work in safeguarding both personnel and the integrity of correctional facilities at a time of heightened scrutiny in the sector. The Department of Correctional Services and the Hawks have both reaffirmed their commitment to rooting out criminal elements from within correctional service ranks.
