A 44-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing of a police sergeant and the injury of a constable during a domestic violence response in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, on 18 July 2026, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS). The officers were attacked when responding to a call-out, resulting in the sergeant’s death and the constable’s hospitalisation.

The SAPS confirmed that the officers arrived at the scene of a reported domestic violence incident, where the suspect struck the 41-year-old sergeant with a sharp object and pushed the 37-year-old constable into a nearby hole before fleeing. The injured officers were transported to a local medical facility, where the sergeant was declared dead on arrival and the constable was admitted for further treatment.

The suspect was apprehended at his residence on 19 July 2026 following a swift manhunt led by SAPS.
