Four men were killed and four others, including two police officers, were wounded during a mass shooting in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, on Sunday evening, according to a statement from the South African Police Service (SAPS). The incident occurred at approximately 17:35 on 7th Avenue, and authorities have confirmed that the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Police Response And Evidence Recovered

Colonel André Traut of SAPS stated that officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered an unidentified man with fatal gunshot wounds. While attending the scene, police heard further gunshots nearby and encountered armed suspects, who opened fire on them before fleeing when officers returned fire. A 9mm firearm was recovered at one of the crime scenes and has been sent for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

“As they approached the area, they encountered armed suspects who opened fire on them. The members returned fire, forcing the suspects to flee the scene,” Colonel Traut said during a press briefing.

Wider Violent Weekend In Western Cape

The Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit has opened four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder related to the Kayamandi shooting, SAPS confirmed. The incident was one of several mass shootings across the Western Cape during the weekend, with at least 11 deaths reported in the region, according to coverage by Eyewitness News. Authorities have not ruled out possible links between the separate incidents but have stated that all motives are still being investigated.

Community members have expressed concern over rising violent crime, with residents calling for increased police presence and urgent intervention. The investigation continues, with officials expected to provide further updates as new evidence is analysed.
