Phelisile Oubrey Melane, a senior official in the Eastern Cape transport department, was arrested on 24 June 2026 by the Hawks for allegedly submitting fake qualifications to secure his job and receiving over R2 million in salary and benefits. Melane appeared in the Qonce magistrate’s court, where he was granted R3,000 bail, and the case was postponed to 10 July in the regional court, according to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

Hawks provincial head Maj-Gen Mboiki Obed Ngwenya confirmed the charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering, stating at a media briefing, “Those involved will be held accountable.”
