The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has called on all eligible citizens to ensure they are registered to vote during the final voter registration weekend on 1 and 2 August 2026, when more than 23,700 voting stations nationwide will be open from 8 am to 5 pm ahead of the Local Government Elections set for 4 November 2026, according to official IEC statements.

IEC Staff, Technology And Accessibility Measures In Place

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo confirmed that 48,212 registration staff have been appointed and trained for deployment at registration stations. The Commission has also deployed 39,641 Voter Management Devices (VMDs) to facilitate real-time citizenship verification, capture of voter data, and efficient integration with the national voters’ roll.

The IEC’s online voter registration portal, launched in 2021, has enabled citizens to register, update, and verify their details remotely. According to the IEC, this service has seen over 26,000 new voters register as of February 2026, bringing total registrations to nearly 28 million. In a move to encourage wider participation, the IEC partnered with major mobile networks to offer data-free access to the online portal.

Significance For Local Governance And Inclusive Participation

The IEC stressed the importance of broad voter participation in shaping local governance and service delivery. “Expressing your political choice is really part of vindicating your nationhood. It’s about your citizenship. It’s about the policies that are going to be governing our urban spaces, our rural spaces, as well as access to services that people so dearly need,” Mamabolo said during a recent media briefing.

David Mandaha, IEC Deputy Head of Communications, encouraged South Africans to use the online platform or attend the registration weekend in person, emphasising that verifying and updating details is crucial for a correct voters’ roll. The final registration drive is targeted at ensuring all voices, especially first-time voters and those who may have relocated, are able to participate in the upcoming elections.

This weekend marks the last national registration opportunity before the 2026 Local Government Elections, with the IEC reaffirming its commitment to an inclusive, accessible, and efficient voting process using both in-person and digital solutions.
