President Cyril Ramaphosa has accepted the immediate resignation of Advocate Andrea Johnson as head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), following her request to vacate office amid intensified scrutiny after testifying at the Madlanga Commission. Johnson, who cited unprecedented attacks related to IDAC’s handling of cases against Crime Intelligence officials, was released from her contract without serving the usual three-month notice period, the Presidency confirmed on 27 July 2026.

Johnson Cites Pressure Following Madlanga Commission Testimony

Johnson’s resignation came days after her appearance before the Madlanga Commission on 22 July, where she faced questioning regarding the directorate’s prosecution of high-profile cases involving Crime Intelligence. In her resignation letter, Johnson stated, “Much of the attacks revolve and arise out of the cases IDAC has conducted against officials of Crime Intelligence.” She requested an immediate departure, citing ongoing personal and professional challenges linked to these investigations.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said President Ramaphosa acknowledged Johnson’s “years of service in the NPA and as the head of IDAC”. The resignation underscores persistent challenges for anti-corruption structures in South Africa, particularly when actions against law enforcement officials attract political and public pressures. Johnson’s request for immediate release, and Ramaphosa’s prompt acceptance, signal continued strain on the prosecutorial independence of the country’s specialised agencies.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is expected to announce an interim IDAC head while the process to appoint a permanent replacement continues.
