Seven people were killed in two separate mass shootings in the Western Cape over the Christmas period, with two men shot dead in Delft’s Tsunami informal settlement on 25 December and five others hit in Philippi’s Steve Tshwete Street on 27 December, according to police reports. The suspects in the Philippi incident fled in an unidentified vehicle and remain at large, while the motives for both attacks are still under investigation.
Delft And Philippi Shootings Under Police Investigation
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said the Delft incident involved assailants entering a house in the Tsunami informal settlement and opening fire at the occupants, resulting in two fatalities. “According to reports the victims were sitting inside the house when unknown suspects entered and fired several shots at them,” Twigg stated, as reported by IOL.
In the Philippi attack, police spokesperson Novela Potelwa confirmed that three men were fatally wounded while sitting inside a stationary Toyota Avanza on Steve Tshwete Street. “Police reports indicate the deceased persons were inside a stationary vehicle in Steve Tshwete Street when five yet-to-be identified suspects emerged from another vehicle and fired shots randomly,” Potelwa said. The perpetrators fled the scene, and police have appealed to the public for information to assist their investigation.
Community Calls For Collaboration To Address Ongoing Violence
The Western Cape has been hit by a series of mass shootings in recent years, raising ongoing concerns about public safety and law enforcement’s ability to respond effectively. Community figures, including Nyanga Community Policing Forum Secretary-General Dumisani Qwebe, are urging greater cooperation between local residents, the police and other stakeholders. “We want the community to work with the police and also we want the taxi industry to be part of meetings about safety,” Qwebe told IOL.
These latest incidents highlight persistent violence affecting working-class communities and the urgent need for coordinated action to address underlying causes. Police have not yet determined whether the attacks are linked or gang-related, and investigations are ongoing.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigations continue and as efforts intensify to improve safety in the affected areas.
