Suspected Rhino Poaching Kingpin Joseph Nyalungu Shot Dead in Mpumalanga

Joseph ‘Big Joe’ Nyalungu, a former police officer and alleged rhino poaching syndicate leader, was shot dead on 16 May 2026 at his business premises in Mkhuhlu township, Mpumalanga, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo. Police said two gunmen exited a white bakkie and fired multiple shots at Nyalungu, who was out on bail for multiple rhino poaching and money laundering charges, before fleeing the scene at high speed.

Police Response And Ongoing Investigation

Colonel Masondo stated, “Yes, I can confirm a prominent rhino poaching kingpin was shot today. I am going to the scene, and I will issue a statement in 30 minutes.” According to police, the victim attempted to flee, but was pursued by the attackers who allegedly fired several times before escaping.

Nyalungu’s killing took place one week after he survived a shooting at the same location on 8 May 2026. Police have not yet announced any arrests but confirmed that a murder investigation is underway. At the time of his death, Nyalungu faced ongoing charges related to extensive rhino poaching operations in the province.

Background On Nyalungu And Significance Of The Incident

Nyalungu was a well-known figure in Mpumalanga’s illegal wildlife trade, with accusations spanning years of managing a major rhino poaching and money laundering operation. His status as a former police officer accused of facilitating illegal activities drew public attention and concern among conservation and law enforcement sectors.

His assassination underscores the levels of violence associated with the illegal wildlife trade in South Africa, particularly in provinces heavily affected by poaching. The death of a major accused syndicate leader may disrupt ongoing criminal networks but also raises questions regarding safety, corruption, and justice within wildlife crime investigations.

The Mpumalanga police are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
