Vanderbijlpark Police Sergeants in Court for R100,000 Bribery Case

Five Vanderbijlpark police sergeants appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Regional Court on 7 July 2026, facing charges of corruption and extortion after allegedly demanding a R100,000 bribe from a supermarket owner during a raid for illicit cigarettes in October 2024, according to court documents and statements from the South African Police Service.

Details Of The Alleged Bribe Plot

The accused officers—Sergeants Johannes Thakhisi (45), Ntombeko Seya (44), Mpho Molatedi (39), Nhlanhla Sithole (42), and Tlokotsi Kganya (36)—allegedly told the businessman he would avoid arrest and confiscation if he paid the demanded sum. The Hawks’ Vaal Serious Corruption Investigation unit launched an inquiry after the supermarket owner reported the incident.

Lieutenant Colonel Granville Meyer, speaking on behalf of the Hawks, stated, “An application for an undercover sting operation was immediately authorised.” The officers were formally summoned to court on 18 June 2026 after the Director of Public Prosecutions determined prosecution was warranted. The case has now been postponed to 13 July 2026 for further investigation, as confirmed by court officials.

SAPS Response And Broader Integrity Concerns

The South African Police Service has confirmed that internal disciplinary proceedings will follow the ongoing criminal matter. SAPS said in an official statement, “SAPS will also institute internal disciplinary proceedings against the officers following their court appearance.” Attempts to reach legal representatives for the accused were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

This case has drawn attention to persistent concerns about systemic corruption within the police service. According to multiple official and media reports, the involvement of the Hawks and the decision to prosecute at a regional level demonstrate authorities’ seriousness in addressing allegations of misconduct. Community leaders in Vanderbijlpark have called for greater transparency and stricter oversight of law enforcement conduct.

The five officers are expected to reappear in court on 13 July 2026 as further investigations proceed.
