In December, former Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma formally applied for Justice Khampepe\u2019s recusal, citing her past roles in the TRC and National Prosecuting Authority as grounds for perceived bias, according to documents submitted to the Commission. The inquiry continues to consider the recusal application, which has prompted debate over the impartiality necessary for handling such sensitive historical matters.<\/p>\n
Mr. Kriel, a participant in the Commission, emphasised the importance of transparency, stating, \u201cWe submit that the Commission will be unable to fulfil its mandate without a proper evaluation and publication of the TRC list of cases, as well as an analysis of which case dockets are still available.\u201d The Commission\u2019s proceedings have reignited calls from civil society and victims\u2019 groups for greater openness in resolving unfinished apartheid-era cases.<\/p>\n
The TRC, established to promote reconciliation by offering amnesty in exchange for full disclosure of politically motivated crimes, left hundreds of cases unresolved when individuals either did not apply or were denied amnesty.
