Operation Prosper, launched on 1 March 2026, followed Ramaphosa’s February announcement that the SANDF would aid in cracking down on gang violence, crime, and illegal mining. However, by mid-August, police had documented 70 killings in the Western Cape over just seven days, and on 7 August, two SAPS Anti-Gang Unit officers and two civilians were killed in an ambush in Reiger Park, Gauteng, highlighting the ongoing risks facing both officers and communities.<\/p>\n
The R823 million allocation for Operation Prosper has drawn scrutiny as figures suggest on-the-ground violence remains unchecked. Community members in high-impact areas such as Riverlea have expressed continued fear despite higher police and military visibility. “These people (soldiers) can patrol 24 hours for us here in Riverlea because the shooting is worse and worse,” said resident Rabia Williams. Yasin Botha added, “I feel unsafe because we don’t know when the next shooting is going to happen… with army visibility and police visibility, I can assure you that I would feel 100% safe.”<\/p>\n
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde welcomed the SANDF deployment but stressed it is a stopgap. Speaking on 14 August, Winde stated, “I welcome the long overdue focus on gangsterism and the commitment to lifestyle audits for senior SAPS members.
