The survey, conducted in June and July 2026 and published on September 4, carries a margin of error of 6.86 percentage points for eThekwini. Analysts across multiple outlets agree that service delivery failures have eroded traditional party loyalties among Indian-descended voters, making the constituency more contested than at any point in recent electoral history.

MK Surge Reshapes eThekwini Electoral Calculus

eThekwini Municipality is currently governed by an ANC-led arrangement involving the IFP, EFF and smaller parties, but this coalition faces pressure from MK’s growing dominance. According to Ipsos survey commentary reported by the Sunday Times, only MK shows a strong dominant position in eThekwini, suggesting that many metros are headed for coalition governments. The survey is not an election forecast and cannot establish who will win individual councils, with turnout remaining a key uncertainty. The Witness reported on September 10 that several major KZN parties are heading into the November polls grappling with internal revolts and defections that could weaken them in key municipalities, though specific details could not be independently verified from available reporting.

Service Delivery Drives Voter Realignment

Dr Lubna Nadvi, a political analyst, told IOL that South Africans of Indian origin have become far more discerning in their voter choices, particularly in townships like Chatsworth and Phoenix. “These parties have failed them in multiple ways,” Nadvi said, referring to parties that have held power in those areas. Thabani Khumalo, another political analyst, told IOL that almost all local governments are dysfunctional and predicted voters across racial lines would give new parties an opportunity. Shameen Thakur-Rajbansi, leader of the Minority Front, told IOL that Indian communities in KZN have felt “politically orphaned,” enduring collapsed infrastructure, unreliable utilities, rising crime and cultural neglect. The Minority Front plans to focus on Indian-populated wards across eThekwini and broader KZN, including Chatsworth, Phoenix, Reservoir Hills, Verulam, Tongaat and parts of Pietermaritzburg, Newcastle and Port Shepstone. DA KZN provincial leader Sithembiso Ngema, newly elected to the post, told IOL that the party does not want to use misinformation as a marketing strategy, saying: “We want to deliver to our people and commit ourselves that if they lend us their votes, we will then be able to have power at hand to deliver.” Professor Bhekithemba Mngomezulu, a political analyst, told IOL that a significant number of Indian community members with traditional IFP ties are unlikely to abandon the party despite the passing of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The 2026 local government elections will test whether MK’s provincial surge translates into ward-level control across KZN’s most contested municipalities.

An Ipsos survey places MK Party at 55% support in eThekwini as KZN’s Indian-descended voters weigh new political options driven by service delivery failures ahead of the November 2026 local elections.

[26
680,134,947,948,139,949,97,234
post-1097","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","tag-2026-local-government-elections","tag-ethekwini","tag-indian-voters","tag-ipsos-survey","tag-kzn","tag-minority-front","tag-mk-party","tag-service-delivery

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.5 (Yoast SEO v21.5) -
