Fadiel Adams, leader of the National Coloured Congress and Member of Parliament, returned to the National Assembly on Monday after a 20-day suspension, just days before his fraud and defeating the administration of justice case was postponed to 16 October in the Pinetown Regional Court. Adams, who is out on R10 000 bail, rejected suggestions that his legal troubles had weakened his political standing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe media should stop calling me embattled. Do I look embattled?\u201d Adams told reporters outside court on 11 September, after the matter was adjourned for a pre-trial conference. The State alleges that on 2 November 2024 and 24 January 2025, Adams misrepresented the purpose of his visits to Westville Correctional Centre, claiming to be on official parliamentary oversight duty when he interviewed trial-awaiting inmates Sibusiso Ncengwa and former Sergeant Bonginkosi Dlamini without authorisation.<\/p>\n
Adams completed a 20-day suspension on 7 September 2026 for sharing an internal email screenshot containing a Democratic Alliance staffer\u2019s contact details on social media. The suspension was imposed by Parliament\u2019s ethics committee for violating the code of conduct. His return coincided with the court appearance, prompting discussions about the dual pressures facing the opposition parliamentarian.<\/p>\n
Adams was arrested earlier in 2026 by the Political Killings Task Team at the Parliamentary Village in Cape Town. He insisted the timing of his legal troubles was suspicious, stating, \u201cEverything is late, and everything is last minute and sabotaged. We are talking about the PKTT. This is how they operate, but it is okay. We received everything late.\u201d<\/p>\n
National Prosecuting Authority KwaZulu-Natal regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara outlined the State\u2019s case, saying Adams allegedly misrepresented his visits as official duty to the SAPS, eThekwini Metro Police, and correctional officials. As a result, authorities arranged an official escort from King Shaka International Airport to the prison and back. Adams is also accused of recording interviews with the inmates and obtaining their statements without permission from the investigating team or the inmates\u2019 legal representatives.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn doing so, the accused allegedly misrepresented to the various authorities, including the SAPS, eThekwini Metro Police and officials at the Westville Prison Correctional Centre that he was on official duty,\u201d Ramkisson-Kara said. She added that the State alleges Adams was not officially mandated by Parliament to conduct the visits. Adams denies all charges and has previously claimed he was investigating police misconduct based on a tip-off from a whistleblower.<\/p>\n
State Advocate Nokulunga Ngcobo informed the court that the investigation was finalised and all statements had been provided to the defence. Adams\u2019 attorney, Donovan Moodley, confirmed receipt and agreed to the 16 October pre-trial conference date.
