An Afrobarometer report published on 29 March 2026 found 55% of citizens rank unemployment as the top priority for government, followed by crime and security at 35%.

An Ipsos poll released on 26 March 2026 showed only 38% of South Africans believe their municipality is doing its job well, while 47% say no political party represents their views. Despite that political homelessness, 64% of eligible voters said they intend to vote.

Voter Priorities Beyond Party Identity

The Afrobarometer survey listed water supply at 31%, roads and infrastructure at 28%, corruption at 21%, and electricity at 18% among the most pressing issues. Housing, health, and education trailed at 16%, 15%, and 13% respectively.

Ground-level voters interviewed by IOL echoed these findings, framing their choices around daily survival rather than ideological loyalty. University student Thobeka Mnguni, 21, said she is voting for future job prospects.

“I am not voting for a party name or a history lesson. I am voting so that when I finish my degree, there’s an actual job waiting for me. My vote is about my future.”

Small business owner Sipho Makhabela, 42, tied his vote to reliable electricity and roads, describing how service failures affect his livelihood. Pensioner Elena Williams, 58, said crime has made politics personal, and she wants accountable policing and safe streets.

Working parent Marcus Fourie, 38, said he is no longer reading party manifestos but looking at grocery receipts and will vote for whoever can make life affordable. Job seeker Aisha Van Zyl, 24, rejected “empty rhetoric” and said she wants real entry-level jobs.

Coalition Expectations And Local Accountability

The Ipsos data also found 63% of South Africans believe political parties should work together in municipalities, suggesting appetite for coalition governance after the polls. The uMkhonto weSizwe Party recorded 14% support among registered voters, positioning it to influence post-election municipal arrangements.

That support exists even though no party currently represents the views of nearly half the electorate. IOL reported South Africans will go to the polls on 4 November 2026, but the Electoral Commission has not confirmed that date.

Voters are expected to scrutinise candidates against specific delivery benchmarks, from youth employment to crime reduction and infrastructure repair. The next test will be whether parties translate this pragmatic mood into accountable local government.

New surveys show South Africans prioritise jobs, safety, and services over party loyalty, with 47% politically homeless and 64% intending to vote.

[14
977,804,213,976,745,97,234,174,205,978
post-1106","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics","tag-afrobarometer","tag-coalition-government","tag-crime","tag-ipsos","tag-local-elections","tag-mk-party","tag-service-delivery","tag-south-africa","tag-unemployment","tag-voter-sentiment

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.5 (Yoast SEO v21.5) -
