Unemployment is the most pressing concern for 55% of citizens, followed by crime and security at 35%, according to a recent Afrobarometer report. Water supply and infrastructure upkeep are the next highest priorities, cited by 31% and 28% respectively.

An Ipsos poll from March reveals that 96% of South Africans rate the government’s performance on job creation as fairly or very bad. Only 38% believe their local municipality is doing its job well, despite the fact that 64% of eligible voters say they want to cast their ballot and 66% view voting as personally important.

Top Voter Priorities Revealed

A series of voter interviews conducted by IOL underscores these national trends, with individuals describing how their personal circumstances shape their electoral choices. Thobeka Mnguni, a 21-year-old university student, said she is not voting for a party name or history but for a future with actual jobs. Sipho Makhabela, a 42-year-old small business owner, stated that he will vote for reliable services and working infrastructure, as power cuts and deteriorating roads directly harm his livelihood.

“I am not voting for a party name or a history lesson. I am voting so that when I finish my degree, there’s an actual job waiting for me. My vote is about my future.”

Pensioners echoed similar demands. Elena Williams, 58, said she is voting for safe streets and accountable policing so that her grandchildren can play outside. Margaret Zondo, 67, described her vote as a demand for basic dignity: safe streets, reliable healthcare, and a government that respects older citizens. For 38-year-old working parent Marcus Fourie, the vote is about affordability, assessed by grocery receipts rather than manifestos.

Community Action Gains Momentum

As trust in formal politics wanes, communities are stepping in to fill service delivery gaps. The Daily Maverick reports that the Joburg Crisis Alliance and the eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement are among civic groups now planning to contest elections directly. This trend aligns with the 63% of South Africans who, according to Ipsos, believe political parties should work together in coalition at the local level.

Despite over 500 registered parties, 47% of citizens feel no party represents their views, creating a fragmented landscape where no single party commands majority support in key metros. The approaching polls are thus likely to produce competitive, coalition-driven councils. Voters like Aisha Van Zyl, a 24-year-old job seeker, are explicitly rejecting empty rhetoric in favour of policies that create sustainable entry-level employment.

Surveys reveal unemployment, crime, water, and roads top voters’ priorities as many feel politically homeless ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

[14
981,982,797,97,234,205,979
post-1108","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics","tag-coalition-governments","tag-community-action","tag-local-government-elections-2026","tag-mk-party","tag-service-delivery","tag-unemployment","tag-voter-priorities

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.5 (Yoast SEO v21.5) -
