An Afrobarometer study found 55% of citizens identified joblessness as the government\u2019s most urgent priority, while 35% named crime and security as the second-most critical problem. The same survey revealed that 96% of South Africans rate the government\u2019s performance on job creation as fairly or very bad, and 85% say elected officials should prioritise voter demands over their own ideas.<\/p>\n
An Ipsos poll released on 4 September places national support for the ANC at 31%, the DA at 25%, the MK Party at 14%, and the EFF at 11%, with 76% of respondents saying they are likely or very likely to vote. The numbers are driven by a deep hunger for basic competence and economic relief.<\/p>\n

Pensioner Elena Williams, 58, linked her vote directly to safe streets and accountable policing, saying politics stops being abstract when crime keeps families indoors after dark.<\/p>\n
Civic Movements Rise As Trust In Government Erodes<\/h4>\n
The Afrobarometer survey also found that 51% of citizens believe Members of Parliament \u201cnever\u201d try their best to listen to ordinary people. That distrust is fuelling direct community action.<\/p>\n

The eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement is going further, with chairperson Asad Gaffar stating that people are choosing between food and paying the municipality, and confirming the movement will field candidates to contest the elections. Political analyst Sethulego Matebesi warned against disillusionment, urging the Independent Electoral Commission to bridge the trust gap through voter education and calling on citizens to vote for competent leaders rather than abandon democracy.<\/p>\n
