Andrea Johnson, head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), resigned with immediate effect on 26 July, citing ongoing personal and professional attacks that she says posed a reputational risk to IDAC and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), according to her formal resignation letter and official media reports.<\/p>\n
Johnson’s resignation follows her testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where she faced questions regarding IDAC’s probe into senior Crime Intelligence officials as well as her own conduct. During her appearance, Johnson admitted to authorising investigations without sufficient basis and making incorrect public statements about officials\u2019 qualifications, as reported by Business Day.<\/p>\n
She invoked her constitutional right against self-incrimination during the same proceedings, following allegations from proceedings and eyewitness accounts that she leaked a police docket to a Crime Intelligence officer. The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party had previously called for Johnson\u2019s immediate suspension, citing concerns of interference in criminal investigations, according to a statement reported by Eyewitness News.<\/p>\n
In her resignation letter, Johnson requested waiver of her contractual three-month notice period, arguing that continued service would amplify reputational damage to both institutions. She described the situation as generating “an extreme amount of negative attention not just to me, but to IDAC and the NPA.”<\/p>\n
Explaining her decision, Johnson wrote, “I cannot be the reason that there is so much negative attention and reputational risk to IDAC and the NPA.” She added, “The NPA and IDAC must and will always come first and I believe that this resignation in the manner proposed would serve the institutions and the country best.”<\/p>\n
Johnson’s resignation marks the culmination of months of scrutiny over her leadership and IDAC\u2019s operations.
