President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that South Africa’s next Local Government Elections will take place on 4 November 2026, with government and the Electoral Commission calling for maximum public participation following the first round of voter registration on 20–21 June 2026.

Government And Electoral Commission Emphasise Voter Engagement

Announcing the date on 30 April, President Ramaphosa said, “I therefore determine that the next local Government Elections will be held on a Wednesday, on a date I now determine as the 4th of November 2026.” Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, urged all eligible residents to participate and highlighted the impact of municipal decisions, stating, “The decisions taken by municipalities affect the daily lives of residents, from water and sanitation to roads, electricity, local economic development and community safety.”

The Electoral Commission (IEC) reported 2.9 million voter registration transactions during the June registration weekend. Sy Mamabolo, the IEC’s Chief Electoral Officer, confirmed, “Over the two voter registration days, the Commission recorded 2.9 million registration transactions.”

Online Registration Targets Youth And First-Time Voters

To broaden accessibility, the IEC has also launched an online voter registration campaign. The new system aims to simplify the process, particularly for young people and South Africans registering for the first time, a demographic historically underrepresented at the polls according to previous IEC data.

The 2026 elections are viewed as critical for ensuring representative local governance and effective service delivery, with officials and community leaders emphasising the importance of high voter turnout. An additional voter registration drive is expected before the closing of the voters’ roll, with the IEC continuing its outreach both on the ground and online.

The next major update from the IEC will be the announcement of the final date for closing the voters’ roll, following additional registration drives later this year.
