Eskom announced on 4 August 2026 that it has maintained a consecutive 441-day period without load shedding, attributing the milestone to improved operational reliability, significantly higher generation output, and effective implementation of its Generation Recovery Plan, according to an official statement.

Operational Improvements and Reduced Outages

Eskom’s Energy Availability Factor (EAF) has risen to 66.97% for the current financial year, up 7.28% compared to the same period last year, according to Eskom’s year-to-date data. On 26 July, the utility recorded a daily EAF of 82.04%, the highest rate since 2017, illustrating the progress in restoring stable generation capacity.

Average unplanned outages for the week ending 30 July dropped to 5,553MW from 10,641MW recorded in the equivalent week in 2025, figures from Eskom indicate. This reduction has been key to sustaining supply during peak demand. Diesel expenditure for the financial year to date reached R807.41 million, representing an 85.67% decrease compared to the same period last year as reliance on expensive open-cycle gas turbines diminished.

Background and Strategic Response

The Generation Recovery Plan, introduced three years ago, has underpinned Eskom’s turnaround after a decade marked by frequent and disruptive load shedding. The plan prioritised technical recoveries, targeted maintenance cycles, and strategic partnerships to address systemic faults. Board Chairman Mteto Nyati stated, “This moment has been three years in the making since the inception of the generation recovery plan. Eskom’s employees have again delivered using their deep technical and institutional capability built over decades of public investment that remains a critical part of our national capacity, which will now increasingly focus on delivering cleaner sources of energy.”

Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane also credited Eskom’s workforce and partners, saying, “The delivery of this milestone again demonstrates that Eskom’s true progress is rooted in the expertise of its 40,000 people, our Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and other partners,” during a media briefing marking the one-year load shedding-free period. According to Eskom, the Load Reduction Eradication Programme has removed around 1.196 million customers from load reduction schedules, helping to stabilise community supply nationwide.

Eskom reaffirmed its commitment to operational recovery and grid reliability, noting, “Eskom’s operational recovery continues to deliver tangible results, with the power system remaining stable and adequately supplied as winter demand intensifies,” in a recent official statement.

Eskom’s Generation Recovery Plan remains in effect, with continued public scrutiny expected of future performance, grid stability, and the promised integration of renewable energy sources.
