The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) is actively pursuing potential criminal cases arising from the findings and recommendations of the Zondo, Mpati, and Nugent Commissions, with investigations focusing on Crime Intelligence officials, IDAC’s Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Peter Serunye, told the Madlanga Commission on 4 August 2026.

IDAC Investigations Focus On High-Profile Officials

Advocate Serunye explained that the agency has identified numerous matters involving senior Crime Intelligence figures including Major General Philani Lushaba and Brigadier Dineo Mokwele. He said, “At the time of the Mokwele and Lushaba matters, a significant part of our work was to identify potential cases from the recommendations and evidence of commissions of inquiry that I’ve earlier listed, the Zondo, Mpati, and Nugent Commission.”

Serunye added that IDAC follows a deliberate process after identifying possible cases, stating, “In my group, once a possible matter was identified from a commission report, we would deliberate as a group and I would then compile a memorandum, in brackets, an application addressed to the investigating director, motivating for the authorisation of an investigation.” The agency is reportedly responding to extensive evidence of corruption and mismanagement uncovered by the three national inquiries.

Commission Scrutiny And Internal Questions On IDAC Actions

The ongoing Madlanga Commission has raised questions regarding the legal basis of corruption charges faced by Brigadier Dineo Mokwele. Proceedings on 23 July 2026 highlighted the need for rigorous evidence and due process in IDAC’s prosecutions.

Separately, IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson has returned to work after being hospitalised ahead of her appearance at the commission on 17 July. The commission has also heard allegations concerning Johnson’s involvement in assisting Major General Feroz Khan in an unrelated assault and intimidation case.

IDAC’s efforts remain a central part of South Africa’s continued reckoning with the findings of high-profile corruption inquiries. The agency’s actions could lead to further prosecutions and internal reforms.

IDAC is expected to continue reviewing commission reports and coordinating with other law enforcement agencies in bringing forward further cases linked to state capture and corruption.
