Mandlakayise John Hlophe, former Western Cape Judge President, has taken up the role of leader of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party in Parliament. Hlophe is renowned for his outspoken support of black South Africans, particularly on land issues.
This appointment was announced in a circular to all caucuses of the MK. It follows the removal of 70 ANC MPs who had voted for Hlophe’s controversial impeachment.
Hlophe held the position of Judge President of the High Court longer than anyone else before his impeachment, which was jointly pursued by the ANC and DA. This impeachment was viewed by some as controversial.
Hlophe’s judicial career began with his appointment to the Western Cape High Court in 1995, eventually rising to the position of Judge President in 2000, at the age of 36. His academic background and early career achievements marked him as a prominent figure in the legal field.
Many see Judge Hlophe’s impeachment as a calculated move against the black intelligentsia in South Africa, driven by what has been described as a detrimental alliance between the ANC and the DA.
“Judge Hlophe’s impeachment represented a systematic attack on the black intelligentsia in South Africa, orchestrated by a harmful alliance between the ANC and the DA.”
In his new role, Hlophe is expected to continue advocating for the rights of black South Africans and addressing critical issues such as land reform.
