The life and legacy of Ashley Kriel, the anti-apartheid activist from Bonteheuwel, Cape Town, was commemorated on 9 July 2025 with the third annual Ashley Kriel Memorial Cypher, marking 38 years since his death at the hands of police in Athlone. According to Inkanyezi, the event continues a series of tributes that include the Ashley Kriel Memorial Youth Lecture at his former school, Bonteheuwel High.

Continued Inspiration For Youth Activism

Born on 17 October 1966, Kriel was regarded as a leading figure in the fight against apartheid and became a symbol of resistance after his killing by police on 9 July 1987. Annual gatherings such as the Memorial Cypher and Youth Lecture are designed to sustain his memory and inspire new generations. Speaking at the event, Theolin Tembo described Kriel as “a fiery orator, strategist, and thinker, and a representative of an extraordinary turn in South African resistance politics: the return to mass politics.”

Historical Context And Ongoing Memorials

Kriel’s death is widely cited as evidence of the brutality of apartheid-era policing, and the subsequent amnesty granted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1999 to former policemen involved added to public debate. His alma mater, Bonteheuwel High School, remains a focal point for commemoration activities aimed at encouraging youth to embrace activism and leadership in their communities. The annual events reinforce the enduring significance of Kriel’s contributions to South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

The next Ashley Kriel Memorial Youth Lecture is scheduled to take place in July 2026, continuing efforts to honour his impact on local and national resistance movements.
